Jagannath Temple, in Puri is more than 1000 years old. It has lord Jagannath, Balbhadra and Subhadra who are worshipped. There are many unique facts about Jagannath temple which are not there is other temples. Enjoy the pictures below along with these facts.
From any place in Puri you, will always find the Sudarshan Charka (Charka at top of Temple) facing you. The shadow of the main dome is invisible at any time of the day. bird or planes do not fly above the Temple.
After entering from Singhadwara’s first step (from inside of the Temple), you can’t hear any sound produced by the ocean. But, when you cross the same step (from outside of the Temple) you can hear it. This can be noticed clearly during evening.
Normally during day-time, air comes from sea to land and during evening, the vice-versa occurs. But in Puri it’s totally opposite.
Normally the deities are made of metal or stone in any temple. The idols in this temple are made from wood. New idols are created every 12 years as a part of secret ritual which provides a new body to the lord. According to legends the main priest gets a dream about the exact tree which should be used for making the next idols.
According to legend, Vishnu himself appeared in the guise of a carpenter to make the idols on condition that he was to be left undisturbed until he finished the work. But just after two weeks, the Queen became very anxious. She took the carpenter to be dead as no sound came from the temple. Therefore, she requested the king to open the door. Thus, they went to see Vishnu at work at which the latter abandoned his work leaving the idols unfinished. The idol was devoid of any hands. But a divine voice told Indradyumana to install them in the temple. It has also been widely believed that in spite of the idol being without hands, it can watch over the world and be its lord. Thus the idiom.
Rath Yatya - Every year Lord Jagannath, Subhadra and Balbhadra travel to their aunt's house and then they return back to the temple. They travel in chariots. This is one of the major festivals of India and millions of people take part. The King of Kalinga himself sweeps the roads from where the chariots will pass. It is believed that being able to pull the chariots will wash away your sins.
The quantity of cooked food for the lord, inside the Temple remains same for the entire year. But that same quantity of prasadam can feed few thousand people and 20 lac people also. Still it won’t get wasted or never lag. The Temple kitchen, 7 pots are kept on each other and cooked on firewood. In this process the contents in the top pot get cooked first and then the bottom one.
